कथा सारांश:

प्राचीन काल में राजा अश्वपति की पुत्री सावित्री एक अत्यंत सुंदर, बुद्धिमान और पतिव्रता स्त्री थी। उसने स्वयंवर में सत्यवान को पति चुना, जो वन में अपने अंधे माता-पिता के साथ रहता था। नारद मुनि ने सावित्री को बताया कि सत्यवान की मृत्यु एक वर्ष में निश्चित है, फिर भी सावित्री ने उससे विवाह किया।

विवाह के बाद, सावित्री ने कठिन व्रत और उपवास रखे। जब मृत्यु का दिन आया, यमराज स्वयं सत्यवान की आत्मा लेने आए। सावित्री ने यमराज का पीछा किया और अपनी बुद्धिमत्ता व धर्म से उन्हें प्रसन्न किया। यमराज ने उसे वरदान देने की अनुमति दी। सावित्री ने पहले अपने सास-ससुर की दृष्टि और राज्य की वापसी मांगी, फिर सौ पुत्रों का वर मांगा। यमराज को अपनी भूल का एहसास हुआ क्योंकि बिना सत्यवान के वह पुत्र नहीं पा सकती थी, और उन्होंने सत्यवान को जीवनदान दे दिया।

इस तरह, सावित्री की दृढ़ता, भक्ति और प्रेम से सत्यवान को पुनः जीवन मिला और दोनों ने लंबा जीवन व्यतीत किया।

वट सावित्री पूजा विधि

1. तिथि: वट सावित्री व्रत ज्येष्ठ अमावस्या (उत्तर भारत) या पूर्णिमा (दक्षिण भारत) को मनाया जाता है।

2. व्रत: स्त्रियाँ दिनभर निर्जला व्रत रखती हैं।

पूजन सामग्री:

• लाल/पीली चुनरी

• धूप, दीपक, रोली, मौली
• फल, मिठाई, सूखा नारियल
• कच्चा दूध, जल, चावल
• वटवृक्ष के पास पूजा की थाली

पूजन विधि:

• सुबह स्नान करके व्रत का संकल्प लें।
• वट वृक्ष (बरगद के पेड़) की जड़ में जल चढ़ाएं।
• मौली से पेड़ को 7 या 21 बार लपेटें।
• दीपक जलाएं, कच्चा दूध अर्पित करें।
• सावित्री-सत्यवान और यमराज की कथा सुनें।
• व्रत के अंत में पति से आशीर्वाद लें और फलाहार करें।

Story Summary:

In ancient times, Princess Savitri, daughter of King Ashwapati, was known for her wisdom, beauty, and devotion. She chose Satyavan as her husband, a noble man living in the forest with his blind parents. Sage Narada warned her that Satyavan would die within a year, but she remained firm in her decision.

After marriage, Savitri fasted and prayed with deep devotion. On the destined day, Lord Yama (God of Death) came to take Satyavan’s soul. Savitri followed him and through her intelligence, virtue, and faith, impressed Yama. He offered her three boons—she asked for the restoration of her in-laws’ kingdom, their eyesight, and a hundred sons. Yama unknowingly agreed, realizing that she couldn’t have sons without her husband. Moved by her devotion, Yama restored Satyavan’s life.

Thus, Savitri’s unwavering love and commitment brought her husband back to life, and they lived happily ever after.

How to Perform Vat Savitri Puja 

1. Date: Celebrated on Jyeshtha Amavasya (North India) or Purnima (South India).

2. Fasting: Married women observe a strict fast, often without water (Nirjala Vrat).

Puja Items:

• Red/yellow cloth, incense sticks, lamp
• Kumkum, sacred thread (Mouli), fruits, sweets
• Unbroken coconut, rice, water, raw milk

Puja Method:

• Bathe early and take a vow to observe the fast.
• Offer water and milk at the roots of a banyan (Vat) tree.
• Wrap the sacred thread around the tree 7 or 21 times.
• Light the lamp, offer rice and coconut.
• Recite or listen to the Vat Savitri Katha.
• Seek blessings from the husband and break the fast with fruits or sweets.
